Through the Power of Reiki Energy

Scientifically we are all aware of electric energy, heat energy, kinetic energy, light energy and potential energy, but what about subtle energy or universal energy? Only a few can see it, but can we all feel it? The hippies called it a good or bad vibe. We talk about a spark in a relationship, or speak with envy about someone with a highly charged sexual energy. How often have you said that you will be with someone in spirit, or you will send him or her good thoughts? Does this subtle, unseen energy really exist, and if so how can we harness it and use it to our benefit?

Newtonian physics in the late 17th century encouraged us to believe that everything is made up of solid matter and that everything works purely on a mechanical basis. We have learned over the centuries to base all scientific proof on this Newtonian physical reality, and it can greatly invalidate our intuitive or psychic powers because we are always seeking proof instead of accepting that sometimes reality spreads beyond the pure mechanics of the universe. With great scientific discoveries like Albert Einstein’s Theory of Relativity in 1905, and J.S. Bells Superluminal Theorum of universal connectedness in 1964, and the more recent Morphogenetic Fields by Rupert Sheldrake on consciousness connectedness, our concept of universal energy is ever growing.

Quantum physics shows us that we are all energy fields moving and interacting with other energy fields. Kirlian photography has given us scientific proof of these outer energy fields or auras of people, plants and animals. Photographs have been taken by Dr Thelma Moss in the USA of hands sending energy to another for healing. Special cameras have been designed to capture the auric layers of people showing a specific energetic pattern before and after healing. The different frequencies of auric energy have been captured through colours and we can now have an aura photograph showing our true, colourful selves.

As our knowledge of energy expands and we understand that we are more than just a biochemical entity, we are more able to embrace the concept of energy healing. You may wonder why our energy needs healing, but very often we tend to short circuit our own energy system through some traumatic event which has led to a shutdown or blockage in our physical, emotional, psychological or spiritual bands of energy. We often use the phrase that our thoughts are scattered or our emotions are shattered. If there is no free exchange of energy, imbalances and disruptions occur in the natural energy flow. Basically, illness in the body is a disruption in the body’s energetic pattern that locks us into fixed emotional and psychological patterns. Energy healing is thus promoting balance and harmony on all levels so that we can maintain our equilibrium when faced with the stresses of living.

The oldest form of energy medicine was through touch, and ongoing scientific studies are showing that healing energy has beneficial effects on humans, plants and animals, and that it is not dependent on faith or belief. A growing number of health practitioners are finding ways to use this vital energy system to heal. Ancient eastern modalities such as Tai Chi, Chi Gong and Yoga are excellent ways of balancing our own energies. Alternative healing practices such as Reiki, Polarity Healing, Therapeutic Touch, Acupuncture, Shiatsu, Reflexology and Massage all assist in treating faulty energetic conditions in a person’s energy field. During energy healing, the healer conducts universal life energy into the patient, allowing the overall health of the energy field to be enhanced. This life force energy is not inert or lifeless. It is an active, intelligent and conscious energy. The Chinese refer to this universal life force energy as “Chi”. The Japanese call it “Ki”, and the Indians “Prana”.

The term Energy Healer, Reiki Practitioner or Spiritual Healer often conjures up visions of a robed “cook”, uttering incantations whilst staring vacantly into a crystal ball. People have visions of being zapped by a magic wand and then wandering off drunkenly into the sunset muttering nonsensicals because their energy has been interfered with. Can hands-on healing interfere with another’s energy field in a negative way? If there were so much negativity in the air, wouldn’t it be possible for the healer to draw in some of that negative energy and pass it onto the patient? How can you as a healer or recipient be sure that you are receiving energy that is clear and positive? The answer is simple. The healing energy is drawn directly from the Life Source, and the healer becomes a channel for Divine healing energies. Purely by showing the intention to heal, a person can connect with the natural flow of positive, life sustaining energy. We need to understand the power of our intent and how it influences our environment. We all have this ability to heal by touch, whether it is a mother nurturing her child with a hug, or you rubbing a bump on your leg. We need to view ourselves as energy beings of spiritual origin. Barbara Ann Brennan, former NASA scientist-turned healer explains that we are not in our physical body, but our physical body is in us.

Scientific studies have revealed that energy healing produces immediate biochemical effects such as a rise in the hormone levels (DHEA) that protect the body against major illnesses, and an increase in the activation of cells associated with the immune system. By 1998 more than 177 controlled studies of energy healing had been completed. Dr Daniel Benor, an American psychiatrist reviewed close on 73% of these studies, which show that healing treatments positively affect the growth of haemoglobin, cancer cells, bacteria, human hormones and enzyme levels. A study done at California Pacific Medical Centre found that of 40 end-stage AIDS patients, the ones who received distant energy healings had less illnesses, fewer hospitalizations and improvements in their moods than those in the control group who did not receive healings. Dr Benor believes that energy healing is a potent treatment for all cases of disease.

A well-known energy healing practice is Reiki. It is a form of hands-on healing where Universal energy (Rei = Universal and ki = life force energy) is channelled through the practitioner to the patient. The healing attunements that the Reiki practitioners have been through, fine tunes their physical and etheric bodies to a higher vibratory level, allowing them to channel a high frequency of life energy. This helps to increase the flow of Ki in the patient. When the healer places his/her hands over strategic energy centres of the body, the patient is stimulated to release any energy blockages or weaknesses. The practitioner is the catalyst that assists the patient’s own life force energies to absorb the correct frequencies required to orchestrate a healing. This may be on a physical, emotional, mental or spiritual level.

Energy healing is not a religion, it is a form of deep spiritual connection. Highly ethical procedures are followed that ensures that healing is taking place for the highest good. Healers understand that they are merely channels – a vessel for receiving energy from the highest source. It is not fear-based or used to control the patient in any way. Insight and intuition are often highly developed in healers, who may use this information to give pertinent guidance or counselling where necessary.

How does energy healing compare to mainstream medicine? Both have their perfect place in society. Modern medicine has given back the lives of many patients. It has helped to increase the average life expectancy of people and helped prevent the ravages of many diseases. It must not be disparaged. Many doctors are excellent diagnosticians, and oft times unknown to themselves, use their intuition and inner guidance when making a diagnosis. The responsibility of healing has often been placed solely into the hands of the medical doctor and this is where energy healing differs. Energy healing breaks away from the mechanical concepts of treating only the symptoms. It is not a case of this type of healing helping some problems in the human organism and not being appropriate for others. Energy healing stimulates the body’s own mechanisms for healing itself and is therefore helpful in all fields and at all levels of the organism – mental, emotional and physical. The mind is not just located above the neck, but exists in every living cell because of messenger cells called neuropeptides that continually send information to all aspects of the body-mind-spirit. With over $12 billion being spent annually by Americans for alternative therapies, many members of the medical fraternity are beginning to realise the great value that hands-on healing has to offer. There is a big movement amongst nurses to be trained in Therapeutic Touch and Reiki so that they can offer more than physical assistance to patients. Two nurses, Dolores Krieger (who developed Therapeutic Touch) and Wendy Wetzel studied the effects of energy healing on the human body, and were able to demonstrate positive physiological effects. Two Reiki Masters, Maggie Chambers and Libby Barnett took Reiki into many hospitals and hospice programmes. They have effectively used Reiki in hospital settings with patients suffering from cancer, AIDS, and diabetes, as well as those under psychotherapy. Although they did not do scientific research, the hospital staff did document the improvement in the patients’ conditions. There are a number of medical schools in America that are introducing medical students to complementary medicine. Through energy work in the operating room, patients show less depression and pain, have lower than average organ rejection rates, a stronger immune system, and
